David Walker

William Walker, Ida and David Walker

David "Papa" Walker

David "Papa" Walker, also known as "Good Deal, " was born in Ore City, TX on December 25, 1900 to the parentage of Johnny & Sylvia Walker. His twin brother was named Haley Walker.

David married Ida Jones and had nine children born to their union. They lived in a little community call Paradise outside of Gilmer, Texas where they bought a home and raised their children. The family home was lost through a fire and they had to rebuild. Afterwards, the family moved the house to Longview, Texas in 1955.

David Jr. and Haley Walker (sons) had both just purchased their 1955 Ford Fair Lanes at that time and were not living at home at the time. Baby Jane Prince and I.D. Jeffers was married and didn't live in the house in Longview.

David Sr. worked at a sawmill and the WBA building bridges in those days. He used to pick up peanuts and parch them at night and sold them for 15 cents a bag. Imagine that! David Walker Sr. worked for Lone Star Steel in Dangerfield, TX, where he retired. He later raised live stock and continued to do lawn care for folks around Longview.

He was a jolly guy known for saying "toot-toot.” He was a jokester and always had a story to tell. The name "Good Deal" came from riding the bus and saying to people "Souls, I got a good deal for ya!" Another nickname was "Rooster" because of sound effects he used to make that made people laugh. Papa loved to have fun!

Ida Walker preceded her husband in death in 1945. David Walker died in July 29, 1983 at the age of 82 years old.
