Vivian Walker Black

Vivian Walker is the daughter of Johnny and Emma Walker of Ore City, TX. She was born on September 18, 1917. She is the eighth child of 11 children and is the sole-survivor of her 10 siblings. She attended school in Texas and joined Cedar Grove United Methodist Church at a very young ago. On February 9, 1941. Vivian married Chester Lee Black and from this union two children were born, a son, Clarence Philemon and a daughter, Ronda Sue who both reside in the San Francisco Bay area.

She is the proud grandmother to her only grandchildren: Angie Black-Pickett., Tonya Black-Broussard and Randy Black. But even prouder to witness a third generation and become the great-great mother to six great-grands: Antoine & Adarius Pickett, Jerae & Trenay Broussard & Jahzzae & Jahqueen Black. All reside within the outskirts of the San Francisco Bay area.

“Miss Vivian” was always an active mother who stayed involved in school activities, as we were growing up, and definitely practiced what she preached. She may be small in statute, but stood as a giant when she spoke and disciplined. She is a pioneering entrepreneur who has had much success as a buttermilk and sweet butter producer (earned the name, “Buttermilk Doug), chef, farm maintenance/repair manager, gardening extraordinaire, housekeeper, florist, seamstress, quilt designer, master hair-puller (hair guaranteed not to sweat back), and community childcare provider. However, all work ceased whenever a baseball game was being televised or the fish were calling from the pond . . . Miss Vivian's favorite pastimes.

Over the years, she has quilted over 100 custom quilts in various colors and patterns producing beautiful masterpieces, which still cover many family beds today. I, myself, have never purchased a blanket for my bed during the cool California months, because nothing keeps me warmer than several of my Mother's hand-made quilts draped over the bed.

Although Ms. Vivian loved being at home on the farm in Texas, it was in 1985 that her grown children and grandchildren finally persuaded her to travel to San Francisco to attend the high school graduation of her first grandchild, Angie. Guess what? Two years later she was ready to visit San Francisco for more sightseeing, eating, cooking and touring and she did just that. However, after two weeks of play she said, "it's time to go back and check on Ma & Pa (Chester)" and so, she traveled back to the place where her heart truly belonged.
